Italy: a joint is less harmful than half a litre of wine

Social Solidarity Minister Paolo Ferrero, speaking of the urgent need for depenalising the consumption of light drugs, said that a joint is less harmful than half a litre of wine.

In a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Anan, Italian sociologist Guido Blumir, president of the Scientific Committee Libertà e Droga (Freedom and Drugs) asks for the dismissal of UNODC Director Antonio Maria Costa for having mounted world-wide anti-cannabis campaigns based on distortions and lies.


The new annual report on drug addiction has been presented to Parliament. Drug use is on the increase throughout the country; cocaine consumption doubled during the five Berlusconi-Fini years.

Giulio Manfredi of the Radicali Italiani National Committee, speaking on the occasion of the new annual report on drug addiction presented to the Parliament, underscored the failure of the Berlusconi-Fini regime and pointed out that during their tenure the number of Italian drug users doubled.
